We had an amazing room with a beautiful view of the capital of Malta 🇲🇹 Valletta. We were on top 17th floor. It was very nice to have use of a private gym on the premises and also use of a pool day club across street which is connected underground as well called Manta. But you must ask for the towels from the front desk and reserve a daybed ahead of time. If not you can always go for drinks 🍹 which is a good deal 2 for 1 for a couple of hours daily right when the sunset is occurring.

Must seen before you book the superior sea front room.
(a) I stayed for 3 nights and Room 233 assigned. This room and also the neighbour rooms have grave privacy problem. These rooms are at the same level of a busy foot bridge. The nearest distance between the room and the foot bridge was just the width of two vehicle lane, that means everyone in the footbridge can see what happens at your room clearly, especially at night!
(b) about 1/4 of the sea view was obstructed by the footbridge and most important was that the view of the famous Saint-John's Cathedral was severely obstructed ( unlike the photo appears at the hotel's web site which was deciving). You will hear busy traffic noise at your terrace also.
(c) I asked the staff at the front desk for a higher room due to severe privacy problem but she said the rooms in the same class were all full and could not help. As I would stay for 3 nights and seen if I could change my room on the second day or third day but she could not help also. I then approached the supervisor the second day at 9 am and the result was the same but the supervisor was more swift promising to find an alternative room for me and let me know by email soonest possible probably before noon as I had to go out. However
no feedback was received then and I had to come back to the hotel at 2 pm. Upon enquiry, the supervisor suggested a so called "premium room". Very big with a large terrace with city view but no front sea view. Due to grave privacy problem at Rm 233, I had to accept his offer but unreasonably I had to wait for nearly 2 hours from 2 pm to 4 pm for the staff to clean up the room (the check out time for this hotel was 1200 noon and I thought the hotel management should clean up this room first as there was a disappointed guest who was suffering from the hotel's lack of responsibility to provide privacy to their guest during their stay.
(d) everyday there are guest moving in and out but the hotel management just could not help to move me to a higher level room on the second or third day. Are they fulfilling their duties?

Room floors are subject to availability and cannot be guaranteed in advance. However, the category of your reservation was honoured.
On your arrival date, there were no other available Deluxe Sea Front View and Superior Sea Front View rooms, to offer an immediate alternative. This is why our team informed you we would follow up if availability arose.
The following day, despite high occupancy, we managed to arrange an upgrade to a Premium room with a hot tub, located on a higher floor. This room is in a higher room category than the one you originally booked and the one that was assigned. You are welcome to verify the rates of this category on our official website. The upgrade was provided as a complimentary courtesy to address your concerns.
We understand you had to wait while the new room was being prepared. As the room was occupied prior to your move, standard cleaning procedures had to be completed to ensure the room was ready for your stay, following all the cleaning hotel standards. During this time, your initial room remained available for your use.
While we appreciate your patience, we assure you that every effort was made to accommodate your request within the limitations of room availability.

There was issues with my reservation (they downgraded me from the room that I had booked and paid for) and hotel did not manage it well. They could have very easily turned the situation into a (more) positive one, but lacked completely common sense. Luckily Hotels.com/Expedia stepped in to manage this and refund me. Thank you Expedia! Otherwise hotel is ok, but IMHO you can find better value for money in the 5 star hotel category. Fitness center and pool are located cross the street at a different building, and are limited in terms of opening hours.

Despite spoken with the duty managers, we felt we have been let down by the poor standard of a 5 star hotel.

It's been long coming, as previous patrons of the old Fortina. We took note of the changes, but still loved the hotel for what it is. It's clean, comfortable, parking is cheap, the bar is quiet and well stocked and the restaurants are top notch. In what is today a multicultural society, we were also pleased and proud to note that in the main restaursnt, the chef is Maltese and there is a healthy mix of local and foreign staff.
